The dumping seemed to work for me using ps2link and xlink.
But i am not absolutely sure cause the readme says it is finished when the message "-= DONE =-" appears on screen and the last message i get is somewhat like this : "Dump ROM0 [some memeory address i guess]............done".
I assume thats the message the readme meant.

The only way to be sure is to test it in PCSX2 though.

I had to read 7 pages of this thread to find out that as legal(=unmoded) user I won't dump my own BIOS. I need to buy modchip or some sw. It would be so difficult to state it in readme? Or it was intention? As someone said before me: Download BIOS (it's illegal ofc) or use chipped console (illegal here too). So what I'm supposed to do? (slim PS2)

You can still use SwapMagic to boot the ELF file and dump the BIOS that way - and that's purely software, no modding needed. I guess it's the only somewhat legal way to do it. Of course, without mods to the console (flip-top or similar), you won't be able to do much with SwapMagic other than booting ELF files from USB sticks, but that's enough for dumping the BIOS (note: you'll need 2 USB sticks, one with the ELF, one for the BIOS, because apparently the dumper won't write to the device it's on).

Or if your have the network adapter or the slim model PS2, you can run the elf and dump through the network using PS2Link + PS2Client (which is what I did).;)

General Plot> I have slim but You can't boot ps2link without modchip. Or..? I don't have any networking enabled game here anyway, so my net. adapter isn't set up.:-/
Zastai> Yea, SM looks like a way. That slider thingy looks much more usefull than flip-top case and for my slim PS2Two they even have small plugs for right places under cover.

Yes, I'm pretty sure setting up the ps2client will require some form of modding.

I eventually went with flip-top because the little gadgets didn't do the trick - 2 of the three were easy enough to install, but I couldn't get the one with the long waggly bit (which is supposed to depress a switch inside the machine) to install properly. Flip-top works just fine, at the expense of voiding your warranty by opening the case (but who has a PS2 that's still in warranty these days :D).
So feel free to go with the small gadgets - just be prepared for potential frustration installing them (if you have a recent slimline anyway, of the type that has a metal plate next to the left-hand cover swivel arm thingy).

Oh and of course, you need neither gadgets nor fliptop to dump the BIOS - that's only needed to boot burned discs and imports.

howd you get ps2link on the ps2? i have a network adapter but last time i tried there was no way to get it on the ps2 without an exploited memcard or modchip or swap disk XD

My post was in reply to the post that Zastai made. Of course you need a way to run it (like Swap Magic or mod chip). I used Swap Magic.;)

Just wanted to chime in the following:

I'm using Swap Magic 3 in a SCPH-75001. I couldn't get a straight boot to PS2 Dumper to recognize any of my USB storage devices, even with "-forceusb" (all my USB stuff is crap, anyways). I tried everything under the sun using PS2Link 1.46 (the latest ver, I think) and couldn't get ANYTHING to work. As a last ditch effort, I tried PS2Link 1.22. xLink didn't work, but it tried to. PS2Exec freaked out (a bunch of lines that read "hehe 0"). I couldn't make heads or tails of PS2Client. InLink is working beautifully.

HTH!

Zastai> Thanks for very useful info..:) Actually, I will need gadgets for dumping BIOS, I have to run burnt CD with BIOS dumper somehow. Or with ps2link to run/dump over ethernet. So I'll have to buy SM for this reason.

Swapmagic yes, the gadgets no. The BIOS Dumper ISO is provided as a convenience for those with modded consoles. All you really need is the .ELF file (also available in the downloads section - the BIN version instead of the ISO version) on a USB stick - you do need a second USB stick as target because the dumper won't write to the stick it's running from.

Procedure (assumes swapmagic; may require the Coder version):
1) Get 2 USB sticks (only need about 15MB free)
2) On one stick, create a folder called "SWAPMAGIC"
3) Put the BIOS Dumper ELF file in that folder under the name "SWAPMAGIC.ELF"
4) Put both sticks in your PS2, put the SwapMagic CD or DVD in the drive, and turn it on
5) Swapmagic should automatically run the BIOS dumper, and the results should be put on the second stick
6) When the dumper is done, you can turn off the PS2 and removes sticks and disc
7) All done, and no modding needed, just the Swapmagic disc.

Note: Depending on USB sticks and/or Swapmagic version, it _may_ be possible to dump onto the same stick the elf is on - the procedure stays the same, except you don't put a second stick in the PS2 at step 4.

Just wanted to come back to update. Got the dump and it worked just fine.
Found this walkthrough using codebreaker dvd:
http://www.exploitstation.com/articles/codebreaker_exploit.php
Bought the software on Amazon for about 20 bucks (with shipping).
Formatted my usb flash drive for FAT (not FAT32).
Followed instructions, and it worked perfectly!!

Run the IDGET utility. Select the drive letter containing your Trigger Disc. Click on the GET button within the utility.

I keep getting a

Run-time error '438': Object doesn't support this property or method

error everytime I try that now.

Improved compat is a potential outcome of the new BIOS (soon to be preferably called "PS2 Identity".).

PS2 Identity will contain MAC address information, units serial number, the DVD player EROM with a diff file (for decryption), additional bits and bobs etc etc

It's especially essential that you dump your own BIOS for potential network emulation, can't have thousands users with the same serial / mac address signing on to play PSU or FF11 now can we ;)

This doesn't bring more speed, but it brings alot of essentials to the PS2 emulation table.
Couldn't the "PS2 Identity" Information also be used to prevent use of Illegal BIOS'es (e.g. Blacklisting those)? Preventing or at least reducing unauthorized use. Just a thought

Hi - one question (I think it hastn't been asked/answered yet),

how long does it take to dump the information (using a modchip + USB Stick)?
Because the TV screen says "Dmp ROM0 [blablabla]....." for around 30minutes now.
Is that normal?

Thanks =)
