Backwards compattible?

This is just a quick question to pass the time and I reckon I probably already know the answer, but I was wondering, since the PS2 plays like 99.999% of PS1 games (I think one game doesn't work lol), will the PCSX2 play PS1 games as well? When it's "finished" that is (For lack of a better term).

And if so, has anyone tried playing a PS1 game on the current builds?

Disclamer: This is out of curiosity, I'm well aware of PS1 emulators.

no it doesn't there was a long explanation on the boards somewhere about this, but I don't remember where exactly, but the short answer is no.
nope afraid not

the playstation 2 itself actually has 2 parts one that plays ps2 games and one that plays ps1 games the pcsx2 team is just attempting to emulate the ps2 side of the hardware.

edit: dangit Valcrist you beat me by seconds lol
So that's a no, no-way and never or a "not right now"?
lol im pretty sure that a never ... until later. just use epsxe or another great emulator, why would you wana use the pcsx2 emulator if it ran the games slower than the ps1 emulators?
Coolsvilleman: He never said he actaully wanted to use it to play ps1 games, he was just curious as to if they will ever emulate the ps1 with it, which is a no...
Alternatively you could try a my delta2 frontend, which supports both pcsx2 and epsxe. That'll more or less give you the desired result.
Actually , PS1 Emulation is handled by software on the PS2. So in theory PS1 games may work one day on PCSX2. The actual PS1 emulation is driven by the BIOS which will detect a PS1 disc being inserted into the PS2 and load the appropriate IRX that will run on the IOP(basically a PS1 on a single chip) , which in turns send all the display info to the GS for outputting. At the moment PS1 detection is turned off. Maybe one day it will be used if PS2 emulation is fully working.

auMatt
interesting; I didn't know it worked like that; it sounds kinda like those retro tv-joysticks you can buy nowadays, which also contain one-chip designs...
In a way, if I remember correctly, the PS1 is actually hardware emulated on a real PS2, this being the reason why it is 99.99% compatible with PS1 games, and not 100%. I wonder if this feature was ever to become available in PCSX2, would that mean that playing a PS1 game in it would mean you'd be emulating within an emulator?
I thought that the PS2's hardware was sort of built around the PS1 hardware? And that was why the PS2 only had 2 Controller ports, because if it had 4, it wouldn't play PS1 games or something.
I'm really not sure, I just vaugely remember reading something like that somewhere.
I don't think it's build around PS1... PS1 is over 10 years old! And I'm sure the maker of PS2 are smart enough to disable extra controllers if a PS1 game is being played :p
The PS2 IOP is the PSX processor, IIRC and the sound chip is fully compatible with the original one.

The reason for the 2 pad ports is merely because Sony are greedy bar-stewards.
Kane and auMatt are correct, and thats it really, enough said (esp given auMatt has 'extensive' knowledge on the subject, and is a great help to the team ;) )

I have heards some wacky theories in my time, but a PS2 built around a PS1....
Well I didn't mean it like a sort of PS1 with bits added, I meant it pretty much like Kane said, certain components being designed to be compattible with the PS1 and stuff

EDIT: And just to reiterate, I read this somewhere a long time ago so dun blame me >_>

In this thread its said that PS2 may have an intergrated PS software, mayb, sometime or later, the PCSX2 team will experiment on that but I think EPSXE or PCSX is good enough for emulating PSone games. Those are pretty cool emulators too with great speed and compaitability. Hey but we can all see when PCSX2 has finished right? Or you could use a dualprogram runner which would seem the same...... ( i remember reading about somestuff like that but well all c in time :) ) :hdbash:
Hmm from pcsx2's change log:

[ Legend: ]
[ + Added feature ]
[ * Improved/changed feature ]
[ - Bug fixed (we hope) ]
[ ! Attention (Notes) ]

* 21/05/05:[-] More PS1 compat fixes
[!] Seems the GPU->GS is done by the PS1DRV, gotta find out more
(linuzappz)

* 19/05/05:[+] PS1 games kinda boot now as well ;)
(linuzappz)

so , it seems that pcsx2 will "run" ps1 games :) .. This isn’t strange... Since the whole ps1 compatibility is done by a part of ps2’s bios (ps1drv) so, if bios is correctly emulated, and iop is correctly emulated too, ps1 games should work :)
I hope this does not violate the rules... (From the cvs change log)

hmmmm... doesn't PS2 use PS1 chip in it to 'do' something more than just run PS1 games??

KanedA: if you'd read not far up, you'd have got your answer.
sorry, that's becaus of 2 hrs of sleep I think...
