I have been using XMMS for a time now, but I'm tired of it Winamp-like interface, so I'm looking for alternatives. Something foobar-like would be fine (yes, I have used wine for running foobar under linux, but appart from the fact that is is a little unstable, I would like to try something native). Preferably native to GNOME since i don't have the KDE libraries installed :p

Well of course, since it is integrated in the distribution I'm using :p (Fedora 4) I can't say that it is bad, on the contrary, however I guess its interface doesn't appeal me that much :p

Well... I ended up trying amarok and I can say I quite liked its interface. However, I have the following problem

I am running amarok from gnome, and normally I have no problem when running files from my laptop. However, when trying to play the windows share files from my pc the programs hangs up without outputting any any kind of error. I have tried running it from a KDE environment and it doesn't display such problem. (I've checked the output it gives in Gnome's and Kde's console and it doesn't give any differences... it just seems to hang up) Is there any gnome-kde lib I need to install for it to run properly under GNOME?

Also, I guess it is only natural, but performance under GNOME has quite a noticeable drop (everything seems a little laggish). I guess I will have to live with it, but is ther anyway to improve performance of amarok(any KDE app) under GNOME. (Dunno, a mapper of kdelibs functions to gnomelibs ones or something... highly improbable I know but there is no harm in asking :p)

You're lucky that you can even get amarok to run in gnome. I've been having issues with dcop which is preventing me from running any kde app properly (and I've installed all of the necessary libs and stuff).

About your "freezing" problem...maybe amarok is waiting for the user to enter credentials to get access to the files on that windows share...to fix that, just make sure you save the username and password when it asks for it for the first time.

It doesn't require for any user and passwords though (well, it does when mouting the network share, but after that any app can access the shares without trouble).

Well... I finally managed to make amarok play my streamed files under gnome, however I hear a lot of clipping. Since I am using gstreamer, how do I set the buffer size?
