The best advice I have is getting a nice audio card if you don't have one already.

This summer I upgraded from an SB16 to SBlive! 24bit. Meanwhile I also heard the integrated sound on the family pc. It was quite hard to compare the SB16 to the integrated stuff because I hooked up my SB16 to my stereo set. But when I compare the SB16 to the new soundcard I will never go back to a crappy soundcard like that. Music now sounds so much better with the features of Creative's software (like an equalizer with Metal preset :D) On top of that I can also use Winamps Equalizer and raise it even more. With my old soundcard the music would have become unbearable to listen to, but with this new card it still sounds clean and nice ^^

DSP processors can help give a boost to your sound, but the most important things are going to be your sound card and speakers. These two things ultimately determine how much sound you can actually get. I currently have enough to shake a whole house... so I think I'm good.

Winamp is noticeably quieter than any other program or system sounds, you have to max out the volume slider just to make it close to equal. DSP plugins are nice, but they do preamp boosting, which frequently causes overload issues which result in crappy sound. Winamp needs POSTamp boosting.

Switching output plugin from DirectSound to Wave-out fixes quieter problem. Should sound equally loud as any other player. Just a side-note, nothing more... :)

Yes, using driver related sound boosters will cause issues to sound if you have good speakers or headphones. Even slight boosting and/or usage of software equalisator and i can hear noise and cracking with my stereo + headphone combination.
