Ares P2P, spyware free?

I'll quote something from a P2P forum:
Ares is having connection problems. Some users can connect to the network with no problem, but others cannot, and Ares will just continue to say: "<Connecting>" at the top of the screen. Be patient and give it a few minutes - sometimes connecting can be a lot slower than it used to be - it might even take an hour to connect. As with any software bugs using any application, the first solution always should be making sure you have the latest build installed. Although Ares has been "stuck" on version 1.8.1 for a long time, the build numbers - which are not usually revealed before you download - can change almost weekly. If Ares still won't connect using the latest build, then here are some additional steps:

For a solution try these steps:

Plan A:

1. uninstall Ares

2. Download the latest current version from AresGalaxy.org. (NOTE: although they are all listed as version 1.81, the build can change almost daily, so be sure to download a fresh build.)

3. Install Ares

4. Run Ares; if it does not already say <Connecting> at the top of the screen then go to "Control Panel" and hit "connect" .

5. If you do not connect within about 30 minutes, then click THIS LINK to import supernodes.

If you still cannot connect after another 30 minutes, then you can try plan B:

Plan B: *** Do NOT do this unless 'Plan A' fails to work ***

1. Uninstall Ares

2. Go to Ares Connection fixer webpage

3. Download Ares Connection Fixer v.2.0

4. Unzip Ares_ConnectionFixer2.0.zip and run it. (It should say "found Ares (or Ares Lite) in registry") Hit the "Delete" button to clean registry.

5. Install the latest build of Ares

6. Run Ares; if it does not already say <Connecting> at the top of the screen then go to "Control Panel" and hit "connect" .

7. If you do not connect within about 30 minutes, then click THIS LINK to import supernodes.

Other Possible Solutions:

** If the above suggestions fail to work, you can try Filecroc v.1.01 build 2942 although it may have connection problems also. This was the last version of Filecroc (an Ares clone) that did not have any spyware. Do not download the latest Filecroc from the official site, as it installs non-optional spyware.

** Try KCeasy Although the multi-network P2P application KCeasy does not have Ares chat, it will connect to the Ares network, as well as Gnutella and OpenFT networks.

Ares Connection Fixer

THESE FIXERS WILL NOT WORK IF YOU INSTALLED THE LATEST VERSIONS OF ARES and should be used as a last resort.

The Ares Connection Fixer basically wipes out the Ares registry keys, allowing Ares (either the existing installation or a new installation) to regenerate fresh keys. Make sure that Ares is not running [Ares likes to hide in the system tray when you close the program] when you run the Connection Fixer, the fix won't work otherwise - and you might even corrupt your registry.

Ares Node Extractor

If you can already connect to Ares, then you might want to help out other users by downloading and running the Ares Node Extractor . This will allow you to generate an Ares link that you can copy and paste on a forum or webpage, or in an Ares Chatroom. By clicking on the link, a new new node list will be imported into the Ares registry keys, allowing for a quick connect. The more recently the node link was generated, the faster the connection time should be.

NOTE: As with the installer of any P2P application, ALWAYS uncheck all the boxes when you install Ares. (Navhelper and Navexcel Search Toolbar is spyware/adware; something you definitely don't want to install)

In Ares Control Panel, if "Auto connect to network when I start Ares" is not checked, then you must click the "Connect" icon every time you run Ares.

Unlike most applications, there is no "About" listing in Ares to tell you what version and build number you are running. To find out what build of Ares you have, locate the Ares.exe file (should be in C:\Program Files\Ares) and right-click on it, then click "Properties", then the "Version" tab.

Music is pretty much the only thing I download. So WinMX is still great for that as well as not having any adware etc.
WinMX was the reason why I switched. I kept on getting new files searches that had over 50 sources, yet none of the peers would connect. Reading on a P2P forum, WinMX was exploited and there are fake drones all over the place now....
