>I have a SoftV92 Data Fax Modem would getting a better one halp at all

Yes. The internal modems are crap and half the time won't go at full speed. Get a serial (not USB) external modem.

>I live in The UK I know that I can't get broadband where I live but I could get ISDN however this costs to much to get installed (£70 IIRC) does anyone if BT offer to make my line digital without giving ISDN and how much that would cost

ISDN sucks. A digital line will only give you a clearer signal from the point that the phone line comes into the house. It will not give you better speed unless you use an ISDN TA. How long is the phone cable to your PC? Does it pass a lot of electronic goods?
Secondly, 'upgrading' to a digital line puts ADSL out of the question later.
Thirdly: where the hell do you live that you can't get ADSL? I thought BT were making a big effort to get massive ADSL acceptance.

>that modem is actually a PCI modem already though. maybe a crap one though.

PCI <> Serial. I mean an external modem which hooks up to your serial port.

As the the extension thing: that much extension could be a problem. just being coiled up creates EMF.

One other thing: just to check: which companies did you check ADSL avaliability with. BT and NTL don't always serve the same areas: I can't get BB from NTL where I am, but BT provide it.

CAble/ADSL doesn't really make any difference. Free installation means they come to the house and install all the hardware physicaly. Setting it up on your PC is your own job.

Free installalation would mean to me that they install the cable for free. The only charge would be the monthly fee and perhaps the modem (depends on the provider - that link is not valid)
