Another BCA/SDL WIP

As part of the celebration of his twenty-third birthday, Niels Wagenaar mentioned some more tidbits about the upcoming Sunday releases of Handy/SDL and BoyCott Advance/SDL at the <a href="http://neopocott.retrofaction.com/" TARGET="_blank">BoyCott Advance/SDL site</a>. Particularly users with slower PCs should find this news to be quite pleasing: <ul> With the help of Caz we've managed to get a rather fast scaling/scanline gfx core which is based upon some internal SDL code. This doesn't mean we override the old core. Mainly since it's an internal function this code could become instable or unusable in new versions of the emulators. That's why now all emulators have an other switch implented (-core) where you can select the core you want :) This new code gives me a 3 till 10 FPS more on for instance BoyCott Advance/SDL which allows me to run Mario Advance very fast and on a average of 60FPS (even in scaled mode) without the high frameskip I used before (it changed from 5 to 3) on my P2/350 system.

All things have been implented and some more was added/fixed on the way. This means that after the in-dev testing we can make sure the releases are done on Sunday. I hope to deploy all releases at the same time :) </ul> Niels claimed that the new graphics core sometimes surpasses the speed of Boycott Advance in this <a href="http://www.ngemu.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5782" TARGET="_blank">thread</a> on our <a href="http://www.ngemu.com/forums/">message board</a>. Ooh. Hopefully nothing pops up and interferes with these promising releases on Sunday. Happy birthday, Niels. :)

Thank you :)

I should also tell that speed is definately based upon the graphics drivers under Linux so be sure to get the latest drivers to improve performance under Linux and BeOS. According to Caz there was definately a speedboost on BeOS with the new gfx code and I reccon that this will also provide the same speedboost on WIN32 systems as well using SDL.

I really enjoy playing commercial games now on my P2/350 Linux system (with a TNT2 Model 64 on Xfree86 4.03 with the latest nVidia Linux detonator drivers).

Why can't I get rid of the feeling I'll have to install BeOS sometimes soon ... linux is already installed (there're several cool emus coming now) and was certainly worth it.

Oh yeah, and happy birthday from here, too :D
