Sorry, but to make it sound corretly in VS you enabled Null's envelope and Pitch Modulation, right?
Performance is the price to pay if you don't have a good math processor (i think, correct me if i'm wrong) and the k6-2 doesn't have a good floating point unit (FPU) to deal with that and have good speed. I sugest that, if you can find one that is, you get a k6-3 processor as they're faster (more than 50% faster than a k6-2 of same clock) and you won't even have to buy a new mobo.
Well, a tip for speed would be to tune down graphics: disable anything that's done without the help of the accelerator, like Advanced blending and Framebuffer textures (not sure about this one).
