Analog Stick Buttons - Nessecary?

I'm just going over my pad config through ePSXe here and I've just sat wondering if there were actually any games for the PS that used the so called L3 and R3 buttons that you got from pressing down the analog sticks.

I know they're now pretty much essential in PS2 games, but I can't for the life of me think about any possible PS1 titles that actually used the buttons (if the actual button feature was even within the technology at the time).

Can anyone help me out on this because if it turns out that L3 and R3 weren't actually part of the PS1 controllers I'd like to bind Start and Select to my analog stick buttons.

I played a little bit of the Ape Escape demo without the L3 and R3 buttons and it seemed to work fine :p. I haven't played the demo on a real PSX in a very long time so I can't remember what they did in the game.
Well, I just looked through my PS Underground demo disc (the one with Ape Escape on it) and it does indeed use the L3/R3 buttons (crouching, diving in the water, using the net in the water, and hiding). Some other games on the disc that use the L3/R3 buttons (or just one of them) are Omega Boost, Twisted Metal 4, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Supercross Circuit (crappy motorcycle game, R3 does the same thing as circle), and Ace Combat 3. The disc also has Umjammer Lammy on it, perhaps I should try it out :p.
