Today when I was checking my mail. I got one of those stupid spam mails with this message :
DID U KNOW THIS………

An Indian discovered that nobody can create a folder
anywhere named as "CON"

This is something pretty cool...and unbelievable... At Microsoft the whole team, including Bill Gates, couldn't answer why this happened!

Try it out yourself...
And then I thought "Why not?". I opened my computer, entered one of the drives and then right clicked to make a new folder. I called it "con" and surprisingly when I pressed enter, it returned to "New folder" name. I tried it in capital and in small and it gave me the same effect.

Does anyone have any explaination for that?

OK, to clarify:

Those reserved words are relics of DOS days when you can access the port devices directly using those keywords.

I discovered the darn problem myslef when I tried to make a folder named "con".

There's no way Microsoft can't explain that.

>> Because USB hadn't been invented when the 8.3 filename specifications came about I suppose.

Ah yeah, that could be a reason :p

Dunno, it affects capped CON too, and it could be an acronym

But they made manuals on it and even wrote the "feature" in into the NT class OSes, which were independent of DOS.

Whoa... extreme inheritance.. if so.
