You should. The Haruhi movie (The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi) is considered to be one of the best arcs to date, and in general is regarded as an extremely well done movie by all standards.

You could of just skipped episodes three to seven(and most of two) of endless eight like I did.

Personally I loved the whole E8 arc ( I though it was just genius from an aesthetical POV). Watched and loved every minute of it.

I found it to be quite redundant, but its what triggers the events of the movie.

I watched them all as well. I really can't say I enjoyed it. The beginning music (not the OP music) of each E8 music got old very fast.

ill admit they did make you want for the main to get out of the loop (honestly i forget the name now, i have a awful memory if you haven't noticed.), which i suppose was the whole point of it. But 8 episodes of near the same thing just got old.

Other than that I reiterate my suggestion on Madoka. If you are tired of that one, I will come out of the left field and suggest Stellvia of the Universe, if you haven't watched that one. 2003 had tons of good series, and Stellvia stands high with the rest of them.
Lol don't worry proto. Madoka is only my list but there's so much older anime I wanna see first, it's gonna be ages till I get to it.
And yeah 2003 was epic though I've already watched most of it, or rather all of it that immediately looked interesting. Stellvia had evaded my gaze though so I'll have to look into that.

Well to be fair Shana IS mainstream.
However it has a pristine balance and class like no other show has. It's just perfect, not too much and not too little and this sets it apart from everything else and just puts the show in a simply epic league of it's own.
It's a thinking man's (or woman's show) but offers plenty of action and suspense as well.
Every character, even random side characters have a strength and conviction to them that surpasses even protagonists from many other shows.

Other shows have too much drama, or are just fights fights and more fights or fall back on comic relief too much or have too many ecchi bits or they're great but have a coward for a protagonist or a he's/she's a dick or an idiot or the protagonist is just a tagalong with one of the companions being the special one all the action revolves around or the story just falls into the background as the show faffs around too long and then suddenly remembers to get back to the show or they're of a different genre. Shana has none of these pitfalls.

If you are open to good series from times of old, then I will proceed to recommend my favorites from the late90's early 2000's

- Figure 17: Extremely poignant series about a pair of 'twins' and how they cope mixing their normal life in countryside Japan and stopping and alien menace... wait what? Despite the seemingly bizarre genre mix, it's an excellent series, and possibly the first anime series to ever make me cry.

-Infinite Ryvius: Often called "the lord of the flies in space', I personally think the character exposition in this series is way better than that of its literary classic homologue.

Will add more as I remember them.

Figure 17 certainly does sound interesting as well.

As for Infinite Ryvius I've seen it. It's infinitely better (probably why it was called Infinite to begin with) than Lord of the Flies (the next person to recommend that book to me gets stranded on a deserted island). I do however wish it could have done more with the story, not just the characters. But yeah it's a pretty good show and just about the only drama show I've been able to tolerate.

Saiyuki is alright.
its a bit long though and doesn't end properly.
the inconclusive ending is a big let-down.
you watch all those episodes (the 3 seasons), and then its still not done.

there were some cool parts in it. some might consider it gay though, as its 4 pretty-boy males on a roadtrip.
there's almost no female interaction at all.

yeah I know it's rather long and I also think it's rather odd somehow, it has a distinctly more middle-asian vibe than most other shows and it's really really odd hearing the name Goku and not seeing a Kame-ha-me-ha being fired off... don't the OVA and movie add a bit of an ending on though?

And they're not pretty boys...well the one dude thinks he is but he aint
besides it's the old way of making shows without token elements so if the show doesn't need a female influence then don't bring one in

Take Bleach of instance, other than Ichigo's sisters and Rukia (and obviously the dead mother) no other character needed to be female, they were simply made so for sex appeal and to insert token archetypes into the show.
Naruto doesn't need a single female in it (aside from everyone's mother), they're all in there to set up love interests and clonflicts or ecchi bits.

Do you truly mean it doesn't need females, or do you mean it doesn't need fanservice? Because the line between taste and sexism is very fine there.

I mean absolutely none of them are integral to the main plot line.
They're only there to provide fan service or to create subplots that divert from the main plot or to make it easier for the creator/author to provide variety. The show would function just as well if it was all just guys (though obviously fan service and love plots would not be a part of it).

Sakura is different to Rukia for instance and different to Kaoru and different to Tokiko and different to Lacus and many many more. She pales in importance compared to all of these other female characters in anime. She even pales in importance to a bunch of random school girls in a slice of life show since those are female because that sort of environment is naturally occupied by both males and females.

It may be a sexist view but it's also more historically accurate imo.

well i don't remember the details much in the anime.
but its one of those series where there's a lot of yaoi-ish fan-art for the characters. they're usually drawn very pretty-boy like.

also in the series the characters repetitively display their deep trust and love for the blond-haired guy, who is their leader. i think some scenes were pretty gay.
although you didn't think gundam seed was gay, so guess you wouldn't mind it.

the show would've been improved with some female love interests imo.
one of the characters iirc did have a wife at some point prior to the events in the series, but i won't go into detail to avoid spoilers.

and i'm not talking about females for fanservice, but females to add romantic elements and to make the series seem less boys-love-ish.

Himamori, Matsumoto, Innoue, Yoruichi. All of them related to the main plot (i can probably can think of more dunno this where just at the top of my head). I like Bleach females, so lucky that someone like you doesn't work in the anime department .
