(Thankfully almost all emulators don't run natively in linux so that should put a damper on those plans)
Nah, no plans for a linux version of @ES... the reason why i'm using linux instead of Windows is because i don't want to be tempted and use C# or WPF instead while refreshing my C/C++ knowledge for my new job in Salzburg which i start next month.

Ubuntu changed in the last versions as i remember the taskbar was at the bottom and looked like the Vista/7 one but now is different. The only thing that bothers me is that is kinda laggy. Everytime i click an icon i expect a animation or something that tells me that is doing something but instead nothing happens and it sort of get stuck or something.

.... apart from the fact that it has some OSX like style with the windows and menus is pretty much acceptable and nice to use. I personally would like to remove the OSX similarities to feel better and not feeling like using the enemy OS... ups i mean Apple OS

Well life keeps me a bit busy from photoshop lately... and i'm not really comfortable of posting on my deviantart account desktops i haven't worked at least bit on them. Though i did made a submission there today .

Finished my vector of Maiko and did a simple bg for it, because i also had a nice idea for a desktop using rainmeter (plus some winamp customization ala strike ).

NSFW! (sorry couldn't decide on a screen plus showing a bit winamp and the slideshow option ):

Spoiler:

Another thing i like about this method is that i resolved something that was bugging me, using wide papers on my monitor , i have a lot i couldn't fit quite right but that slideshow app fits the role perfectly.

Well sure there's a lot of blocks, but their just for system information & buttons, my setup does not hinder desktop functionality or gives out a crappy image compression unlike windows 8....

Windows 7 has desktop image compression. Windows XP and prior converted wallpaper to BMP format files, and Windows 7 (and probably Windows Vista) and later use JPG. With some PNG files, I noticed quality loss.

Yeah but on windows 7 there are ways to go around those issues (i for one am using irfanview to set up my papers), but on windows 8 there's none believe me i tried, not to mention the huge quality loss... i only found one folder which may not have been subjected to compression, but it was protected, i couldn't take ownership i couldn't do nothing...

Damn that looks awesome strike... I'm really starting to feel the urge to get Win 7. Yes, I'm still using XP as I haven't found time to acquire 7 yet.

You need a whole new system Radix.

Yeah, but I don't want to use software for something basic Windows should do. Windows XP and prior used BMP, why was that changed!? Compressed formats make sense when bandwidth limitations (such as uploading/downloading on the net) are in place, but not locally, not when systems from the 1990s had no real resource issues with them.

Anyway, I've used Irfanview for years; it's a staple on my system, but I only, and I mean only, use it for quick resizing (or maybe saving to another file type) How are you using it for this?

Windows XP is a great OS in it's own right, but Windows 7, while it has some of it's own shortcomings, is a great, great improvement, and it is totally worth it.

Following up on the above suggestion, if your system is older though, perhaps put it off until then. These might sound higher for what they are, but my own personal "recommended minimum specifications" are a decent dual core CPU (AMD Athlon II/Phenom II or Core 2 series or better), 4GB RAM (since you'll honestly want the 64-bit flavor and less RAM doesn't make sense with how cheap it is too), and a good, fast 7200RPM HDD or SSD. The GPU depends on your gaming and application needs since most modern onboard can probably handle Windows and Aero just fine from my experience. Those are my "recommended minimum" specifications though; for more enthusiast/heavy users, you may as well get twice the RAM (even though it's totally sufficient most of the time, there's little point upgrading now and then going with 4GB unless it's for light/budget use since we're sort beginning to transition to 8GB as the standard for this area) and for the CPU, a fast dual core or good quad core (basically the latter these days).

Don't get me wrong, it's okay on less, sometimes much less (a Pentium 4, 2GB RAM, a GeForce 6800, and a nothing-too-special, older IDE hard drive ran it okay), but if you have a Pentium 4 or Athlon 64 era PC, I'd just wait until you piece the new PC (unless you plan on staying with what you have for a long time or something).

Not enough money for that...

I do like XP but it's getting old and I heard that Microsoft might stop updating it in a few years so I kinda have to upgrade to 7 soon... But when I finally upgrade to Win 7 I was thinking about getting a new processor(maybe), more RAM(like you said, it's dirt cheap if you know what to get) and a new HDD as the one I have now is puny 260 GB(and a 1TB external). GPU could use improvement but they're kinda pricy and I don't really care about graphics as long as it runs smoothly... But to upgrade it all I actually might have to upgrade my motherboard too.

Damn it, this is why I haven't done it... Do one thing and you need to do everything. But yeah, money is the biggest problem here.

In other words a new system. And yes you will definitely have to get a new motherboard. The good news for you is that the low-end packs more power than ever before at least when it comes to processors.

Well actually if you define a folder to be used for papers in windows 7 i don't think it converts them either.

Irfanview has options to set wallpaper from the options menu, (i just use ctrl+shift+c).

Personally regrading the minimum specs for windows 7 i would say a dual core cpu, 3 gb RAM but with the 64 bit version of windows for the possibility of future upgrade (though you could manage it with 2 as well depending how heavy your used applications are), a decent or at least satisfying HDD 7200 RPM, gpu wise an ATi 3650/ or Nvidia 8400/8500 level one, it wont take full potential of the windows 7 but the experience will still be better then with XP Imho.

PS: Tomorrow i'm gonna post a new desktop i've been working on today XD.
