I used to get depressed quite a lot but you just gotta stop feeling sorry for yourself and realize that life is gonna suck sometimes.

If depression is a virtue, then why take medication for it?

I agree with Kaiser with this point.

Me? I'm rarely depressed. When I am, I have so much that I can do to help me get over it. Philosophy and Theology have really helped me deal with it even better.

You may choose not to take medication if it is a small depression only, and you can handle it. If it get worse, it makes your life miserable, so you should do something about it.

I used to take medication for my various conditions (manic depression, social anxiety disorder, agoraphobia and a few other irrellevant neurocies) but due to prescription costs in the US I had to stop taking all but my thyroid medication.

I don't think it's affected me too badly... though occassionally I've found myself looking at Stalin as just another bleeding heart liberal.

Every single human has its way of dealing with it, the first and most important step is to find that way...

Greetings,

There's no standardized mode of dealing with depression. Quoting myself (I love to quote myself ):

Quote:
I was depressed before, even suicidal, so I know what I'm talking about. And what got me out of that state wasn't simple advices, like thinking "good" thoughts. It was a gradual process, more of discovery than knowledge.
It's as old as Socrates: "Know thyself". No self-help books will ever get you out of a depression (some will even make it worse).

As for the physiological side, in case of acute hormone imbalances only medication can help you. Brain chemistry is complex, and we're not as free to act and think as we think we are.

Live long and prosper.

Indeed, that's what makes things easier sometimes... suggestion is a double-edged sword, mainly it works for ill but like anything else if you use it right you can solve lots of problems...

Suggestion can make pain real but its power works for good stuff too

I was depressed for a time. (And yes, I was suicidal, although I never worked up the nerve to attempt, thank God)

Let's just say that it's quite weird.....you're able to think of things unacceptable to normal society as OK or even the most normal thing in the world.....You're sometimes happy, but it doesn't last long.....And many things that should upset you don't, and things that shouldn't do.....

Hmmmmm.....I just described alot of people.

I read that many people who are manic-depressive (sorry if the translation is bad) do not want to change their situation, because they don't want to loose the manic periodes when everything is extremely easy, they are very creative etc..

One of my brothers has manic-depressive schizophrenia. Yeah, sounds scary, but he's innofensive.

School thought I had manic depression before. I don't blame them, I was flying off the walls and throwing desks at teachers when I was in 3rd grade. Now I just swear for no reason at all. I'm gradually healing

Greetings,

Maniac-depressive people (or purely depressed people) often don't want to change their state, because it would be equal to giving up a part of them.
And the right ammount of depression can bring about much creative thinking, and ways of expressing yourself (hence great writers and painters being often depressed).
The subjacent brain processes/chemistry to depressive behavior probably make up for this relutance in being "cured" and on the creative fits.

Live long and prosper.

Well, manic depression is like an emotional roller coaster. Periods of crazed activity and "happiness" followed by innactivity and severe depression (Hitler or Picasso for example.) Medication in this case just helps even out the peaks and troughs, but doesn't actually affect a persons state of mind in so far as being depressed or not goes. Well, that's how it affected me at least.
