Post count changes

After reading a "certain" post yesterday which upset me a bit and reading some good comments and suggestions from other admins, I think it's about time now to change some stuff here.

First off, I think it's a good idea to let the stars indicate the support a user has given, not the more or less useless stuff he discussed about in off topic. Therefor, off topic posts should no more be added into the total postcount, and therefor don't affect the stars count any more - I can easily imagine some users posts count getting cut down by more than half by doing that. But as another plan is to hide the number of posts, I doubt this should really matter in any way.

Why you may ask ? Well, the stars will then indicate the posts in the "main" forums of this board, where the goal actually is to help people.

Further more, we'll soon (possibly already this weekend depending on how the test works out and the new vB upgrade works) introduce a so called "ban points" system. That means that really, really useless posts (many of us have a high tollerance, but there're tons of these here), illegal content, offending stuff, totally mis-placed posts etc. will recive a certain number of ban points. Once you reach 20, the forums will automaticly ban you for 30 days, and un-ban you again after that. The second time this happens to an user, it won't unban you though.
Don't worry though, ban points also expire after a certain amount of days (not sure yet how many), that means you'll need to be on a spam trip during one week to actually reach 20 points.

Comments are welcome, more changes will be added to this post later on.

I think its a step in correct direction and I hope it becomes successful. In the past there have been a lot of discussion about offtopic posts and there validity but no hard step was ever implemented. Some people will say that they are here for fun but if thats the matter they shouldnt be worried about the post counts.

As far as me concerned I am here to help people and let the emulation scene grow more and more.

That ban system really sounds interesting though.

So Good luck Bobbi.

So my post count is down to...err...50? j/k
One question about this new ban system: Is it still possible to ban people permanently?
I think it's a good step: Some people will be upset about it (just look at the thread about the postcounts in site feedback forum) but if they need their posts that badly...

poor K.I.L.E.R. 'tis a BAD time to be a L.A.M.E.R. now.

Anyway, how about instead of postcounts, the "stars" would change colours/appearance every 500 or so posts when you reach the max of 7 stars instead... more interesting than a postcount IMO.

Of course, this is still assuming posts in off-topic won't be counted FROM NOW ON.... or is this going to be applied retroactively?

...and if it's not much of a bother, how about a revival of the "location" info below the register date?

Nezzar: It will still be possible to ban people permanently. As Bobbi stated, that via the use of the new script the ban will be permanent after the second time.
Outside of that, we will still moderate the forums in a somewhat simillar way to that which we are now.
ie. If you do something bad enough, intentionally, or repetitively. It will obviously result in a Perm Ban straight up.
The new script is mainly a ploy to remove the useless and annoying posts/posters.

On the bright side (If you don't think this already Is :P) if everyone posts in a reasonable manner, everything will be just dandy. The way it should be.

Is that new Postcount system activated? I'm still increasing post counts in off-topic forum.

And the new ban system sounds great, looking forward to it!

Yeah , the new post system is welcomed , but i dont think that
Hiding the post count is nessecery ...
The ban system is also a good idea . Maybe you admins and mods
should look into shiori's idea - the location info .

Not really, as I invested in other sections of the boards as well. Ryos will see about, oh say 4000 posts chopped off?

...he can restore it at any time anyway, being the powers that be around here.

well said prafull, that's the main idea we are here.

Bobbi, admins, and mods, good work about changing the rules as i also see that the board has more off-topic posts nowadays and many here just register to for fun (no emulation related posts).

hope this is implemented really soon.

now i have this idea: instead if banning the poster for 30 days, why not let the poster have a trip at the test/spam forum for 30 days. i mean they could only reply if the post is in the test/spam. they could also post but in the spam forums only. they can view all posts but, they can't reply to it.

Actually the no. of posts you lose will be completely irrelavent, after all they will no longer be visable. And the stars that remain will be a clear guide as to the more experienced members.

I think you missed the point. One of the reasons for this action is help cut down the high amount of spam present.

Maybe I'm dense and missed it... but how will tit be detemend which posts are helpful or not? Will it be like ZSNES's Karma system whereby a user can applaud or smite another user?
