RPGs with 2D backgrounds - how to smooth?

I'm playing Chrono Cross, but this could just as well apply to any other PS1 Square game that uses 3D characters and battles but 2D backgrounds.

Using Pete's OGL2 how can I smooth those backgrounds? I've tried every combination of full screen filter, and filtering options (including number 6) and no matter what, the backgrounds stay pixellated, whereas on psxfin although it only has one video option (bilinear filtering - yes or no), with it turned on I get nice smooth backgrounds, far nicer than on ePSXe. But of course, all the 3D stuff looks awful.

Any ideas?

OK I think I've sorted it. Needed Filtering option 2 PLUS AA 2.o filter. Looks good now.

Oooh, I think I answered something from another thread, my bad. It was about smooth... scrolling though. I totally either misread yours, or just ignored it. >_<

Sorry~

On topic, the higher the resolution, the nicer 3D stuff will look and the more pixelated 2D backgrounds will look; and vice-versa. pSX works at native resolution (you can too, in Pete's OGL2) and so 2D stuff tends to look more decent.

If you find that 2D backgrounds have horrible colored borders (like bright green or magenta), try with the hi-res texture mode 2 which will work along the filter option.
