There's this video, which is a quick recap of the first two games :

It doesn't tell everything, so here's my take on the story.
Spoiler:

Long before the story started, a bunch of renegade angels and demons left their worlds and created a new one : Sanctuary. Their union also created a new race, the Nephalem, which are basically humans.
To create and hide this world from everyone else, they created the Worldstone.
Eventually, they realized that the combined power of angels and demons made the Nephalem too strong and they used the Worldstone again to put a curse on them, which would weaken them.
Those are the humans of the "current" world of Diablo.

Also : Hell was ruled by 3 Prime Evils and 4 Lesser Evils.
Prime Evils : Diablo, Mephisto, Baal.
Lesser Evils : Andariel, Duriel, Belial, Azmodan.

Before the start of the first Diablo game, the 3 Prime Evils were exiled from Hell by the Lesser Evils, banishing them to the world of Sanctuary as weaker versions of themselves.
This left the Burning Hells in the control of Azmodan and Belial.

Diablo is captured in a soulstone and buried under a monastery. Mephisto in a jungle. Baal in a desert.

Story of Diablo 1 :
-A king goes mad, one of his son becomes possessed by Diablo.
-The hero is the second son of the king, Adrian, who fixes everything but sees that Diablo's soulstone is damaged and tries to contain Diablo's soul inside his own body by planting the soulstone in his own head.
-It doesn't go so well.
-Other notable characters : Deckard Cain, who knows a great deal about demons. Adria, a shady witch living close to the monastery but far from the village.

Story of Diablo 2 :
-Adrian, now knows as the Dark Wanderer, starts walking across the world, leaving demons behind him.
-A bunch of heroes follow him, killing Andariel, Duriel, and then find out Baal's soulstone was stolen.
-They keep following the Dark Wandered, find him with Mephisto, kill Mephisto, the Dark Wanderer transforms into Diablo and flees.
-They follow him into hell, kill him, and then destroy both his and mephisto's soulstone on a forge in hell.
Diablo 2 Expansion :
- Baal, now free, builds an army and decides to corrupt the Worldstone.
- Tyrael, an angel who has been helping humans for a very long time, decides to destroy the Worldstone to stop the corruption.
- No one knows what exactly the effect of this will be, but it can't be good. Everyone gets ready for a demonic invasion.

-Azmodan and Belial are still rulers of Hell, and sanctuary isn't hidden anymore.

The story is just there as an excuse for hacking 'n slashing, Diablo has never been about story; it's all about endless farming and grinding~.

Diablo has a story?

Dunno about the first 2 games, but the third's got a story that's worse than those in porn.

The lag is really only obvious when you go multiplayer.

Other than that, the game plays just fine if you're soloing.

That aside, I finally beat Nightmare mode. Running through Hell now.

Adventuring in Act II and I came across a Necromancer! Turns out he's the apprentice of the guy from Diablo II (or at least implies it), and thought it was really cool. Too bad you can't play as that class or have him as a hireling. That would be badass.

Also settled on using the stronger setting for DarkD3, makes the game look really glum and oppressive which I love.

Tried the starter pack so nobody says I judge the game without even playing it and by the DRM only... Well, all I can say I'm having quite fun, tried the mage and demon hunter so far. Leaves me a bit confused whether I should the game or not now :>

Well, Diablo 3 is fun to play if you look past the story.

Later difficulty settings are proving to be quite the challenge. Hell is getting pretty ridiculously hard even in Act 1. Skeleton King has more HP than last boss in Nightmare and he also hits harder (7000 damage per hit for 75% physical damage reduction, so a full blow would instantly kill anyone under 30000 HP without any defense!). Also there are larger mobs, so it's more satisfying killing monsters.

Aside from that, I also think Diablo 3 has pretty good graphics for a dungeon crawler game. Torchlight 2 doesn't look as good.

I'll tell you what I'd tell anyone wondering about Monster Hunting / Dungeon Crawling titles. If you do enjoy a never ending pursue of leveling up / getting top gear, you'll have a great time with this game for years to come. Diablo II / Diablo II LoD are a fine example of that. But if you don't see yourself enjoying that ad infinitum, you'll be putting the game down in a month and that is hardly worth 60 USD~.

I've been enjoying Diablo 2 for 10+ years, does it say anything?

Also I think a game that lasts a month is well worth $60, some $60 games last 3-4 days nowadays.

The game only lasts 1 month if you can stomach the story several times over with the same class on different difficulties, or different classes. Unless you play like half an hour a day.

Then yeah, you'll have a blast with DIII. Making aside the DRM crap I really think it's a worthy successor to DII. You won't get to have a feeling that you can do whatever you want with your character until you've unlocked enough runes for your skills but once you do, I'll admit you have more options / variety than you did in DII. Plus, you know, the ever addictive grinding / gear hoarding~.

Diablo II was no different, in fact it had less side content so in that regard Diablo III is better and if he liked DII then he'll love DIII~.

Just wondering... When you level up, what do you actually "get"? No skill tree so no skill points? At least when I looked at the DIII character calculator you just get the skills at set levels or something... Are the attribute points still in there?

You open up skills and runes as you level up. However, the runes can change or enhance the functionality of said skill (regardless if it's passive, normal attack or special attack). For example, as a demon hunter there's an attack skill that ensnares your opponents, later on you unlock a rune that lets you ensare more than a few, then you open up one that adds electric damage to the arrows. How you set up everything can result in different gameplay styles even if it's the same class~.

It does take time to see this, to be honest I was sort of baffled at the lack of options for the first 15 levels but as you progress you realize how diverse it can get. Plus, and unlike DII, it has the advantage that you can rearrange your skills / runes at anytime, meaning there are no permanent errors and you can fool around with different setups~.

Ordered it, finished the starter with every character and I want more, so I guess it's a no brainer. Should arrive within next week (and I am to start painting the house actually :>).

Hell yeah. What class did you like the best?

Also this was brought to my attention, some dude did some re-writing of the games story and it rules. Of course spoilers ahead:

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5150111877

I'd be down if Blizzard made this a real thing. I really enjoy the gameplay (except for being air juggled in harder difficulties) but really despise the story and this would change a lot for me.
