Unable to map controls for ps3 controller

I have a ps3 controller connected to my computer and use motioninjoy but when I run psx and go to map controls it won't let me.

Both my motioninjoy and psx emulator are up to date.

I am able to map controls and use the controller on a variety of other emulators (snes9x, pcsx2, desmume, etc.)

When I go to configure controls in the psx emulator the emulator responds to any input with my controller by mapping the command to its default key on the keyboard.

Device is set to the MotioninJoy controller and I have tried mapping controls with every Type it allows me to choose, but none work.

I'd be grateful if someone could help me figure out the problem
