Just played through an hour or so of Torchlight 2 beta (got cut off by a power interruption at home), and while I cant necessarily say I am super impressed, I am satisfied.

It was fun. Things like finding a magic shot gun that turned out to be the unique "Boomstick", which under its properties had the ability to upgrade if you killed 20 of a certain type of enemy, is neat. It was nice to have access to a set of skill trees again, that is one mechanic that I think works extremely well, and one of the things I have been most disappointed in about D3.

I played an embermage, and the first tier spells were pretty neat.

Also, they expanded the pet system a bit. Like 8 pets to choose from in the beta, looked like more slots available. Functionality appeared to be the same as in 1.

It supports up to 6 people multiplayer, offline single player, and LAN play.

The art style is pretty consistent throughout, and in contrast, does make D3 look gritty and dark by comparison. It is very much toon.

Regardless of D3s merits, I can tell that I will enjoy playing TL2 a lot more. Very much looking forward to playing multiplayer.

I have often wondered if it is really possible to determine intent from a piece of art, whether it be painting, music, games, etc. I cant know for sure because I have knowledge of the situation other than just playing the games, but it seems to me TL2 was created with the intent of providing entertainment to the player. It seems to me that D3 was created with the intent of providing money to the publisher, exploiting the power gamer and gold farmer to create a machine that generates revenue with a minimum of effort on their part.

As an aside, I think I most excited by the Lineage Eternal preview video. Still lots they could F' up on and ruin it, but it seems like they have a solid foundation that a great game could be built upon. I think TL2 may, in some respects, be more of the same, but it is more of the same done well, with whipped topping on top to add a rich, creamy smoothness. :-)

D3's weaknesses are obvious: DRM is the <insert nemesis of your religion of choice here> of the video game World and rightly so. Hacking is something I've mixed feelings about, it's easy to complain about the company but when people are hell bent on exploiting a system, they'll find a way one way or the other. I think people saying that an upcoming game will be better than D3 are talking out of their asses~.

D3 is solid, but it's not for everybody. It comes with the territory of the genre. I also think that the art is not for everybody, but it's far from being the low tier thing I see a lot of people claiming it to be. Music is good old Diablo stuff but enhanced, again, not for everybody but for those who grew up with D / D2 this is an amazing thing. Will it appeal to all? Certainly not, few games do. But D3 is a very, very solid, fun experience making aside it's permanent stigma of the DRM crap. People saying otherwise either came to judge with bias due to the DRM stuff or didn't play the game enough~.

It's a fact for me because interestingly enough Diablo is the very thing mentioned in your first sentence.

That's because originally the link is Spanish not English.
Diablo = Devil
For our Spanish speakers this thread is called Devil 3.

In the first sentence he talks about DRM being the Devil...well this game is the Devil to me anyways in name and thus Torchlight 2 will be better no matter what.

Look I've played "evil" games (in fact Torchlight 2 falls into that category as well) but I draw the line at something actually named Devil.

On the same boat, and my main language is Spanish too. It's just that it seems a few key posts were skipped when he made the original reply. Regardless, and back on the original point, SCHUMI_4EVER proved my point that a lot of people will judge D3 negatively based on the DRM crap~.

It's not unwarranted, by calling a non released game a better choice solely on it may prove to be too bias~.

^For some (including myself) the drm always online crap is an important factor in judging a game (if it ain't for you good for you but don't force or don't think i got to think the same in that regard), i kept on playing diablo 2 for so long also mainly due to the advantages of having a local game and those where mods and save editors, i don't think i would have been able to hold on playing it for so long if it weren't for those. I mean hell in almost 2 years of playing i only got two drops from my favorite used weapon/armor set... Plus there's one more thing i'm worring about a successful always on DRM game can help push this system forward...

Never did. Merely stated the obvious: a lot of people are dismissing the game altogether based on the DRM component. The DRM component is a deal breaker for a lot, that much is fine. But the DRM component doesn't take away from all the many great things about the game itself, ignoring them because of the one negative thing holds no merit. It's like saying a game is bad because is on X platform, regardless of the platform / company, a game (usually) has a lot of possitive things to it. This is no different~.

Tried out the Witch Doctor a bit today, really fun character. Spitting venom, throwing spiders, flaming bats, hands that come from the ground, really cool character.

Not worth it at all playing the hardcore mode as far as I understand, it basically only gives you permanent game over with no additional perk to make up for it aside from perhaps an achievement.

Even without it, hardcore mode always struck me as pointlessly retarded. Why invest copious amounts of time in a character that will be gone forever at the most minimum of mistakes? People used to be crazy about it in DII, I just skipped that mode altogether~.

Because it has greater demonic influence than other games and makes light of something that is beyond evil? Not even Darksiders or DMC is that bad.

Demonic influence ... ? You mean Activision-Blizzard? That's very demonic indeed.

Quote:
Blizzard send word that Diablo III sold 3.5 million copies in the first 24 hours on sale. They also point out: “That number does not include the more than 1.2 million players who received Diablo III as part of signing up for the World of Warcraft Annual Pass promotion.” The upshot of that was 4.7 million people had the game on day one, and after a week that as grown to 6.3 million. That is a lot of copies of a videogame.
