Are you saying there's no way to sort the tiles in metro? So everything you've ever installed just appears in a long list?

You can manually sort them but it still doesn't look good.

A lot of legacy apps install readme links and other crap that you have to remove manually.

Well it's stuff that traditionally went into the application's start menu folder....there's nothing wrong with that...it's just further proof that Metro sucks horrendously.

I will do some investigation and eventually come with a solution. Metro itself could be far better but for some reasons MS people fail to provide something goood.

Fixed for ya.

Honestly, though, I find it silly that Office would litter its icons in Metro like that. Never had such issues with the Adobe CS suite, but I guess because they were desktop-only.

MS actually do have a great dev team but just as Steve Jobs once said "they have no taste". Surprisingly they have some people with taste but those people doesn't have enough power to get things through and probably because of that they've failed to provide something to the table. A good example is MS Courier which to my opinion was nothing but awesome yet for some strange reasons they just cancelled.

Still... i love MS concepts but is sad they rarely turn real:

VS Apple concept (love the video)

Eh.. yeah.

Thing is... Apple never releases any concept video. Their products come and then people realize what Apple has been working on for the past... long while.

Microsoft releases concepts, and they realize... about 0.01% of the concepts they release, all the while drumming up unnecessary hype.

Apple has hype, too, but it's a different kind of hype. As in... people actually expect Apple to be able to deliver the stuffs Microsoft show in their concept videos (Siri is a good example), whereas almost everyone has lost hope in Microsoft at this point.

That aside, back to Win 8:

http://liliputing.com/2012/05/window...yond-aero.html

And what can I say? Good riddance Aero. No, wait, I mean... Aero Glass. Aero itself wasn't that bad, but it was the glass interface that was bad. It was eye candy mostly, with no real utility, but it sucked resources like crazy back when it first came out.

Now Microsoft has learned.

The key is to make interface rendering routines as simple as possible so that it performs fast while using the least amount of resource possible.

This is promising. Now if they'd just admit what a piece of **** that Metro interface is, and try to bring back a better desktop experience, then I think they may yet have a future.

I like the Aero eye candy, and the little lights and glows here and there. Otherwise I would be using the classic theme. =S

On a laptop, it sucks even more. Not only does it slow things down drastically, it also decreases battery life by as much as 75%.

I'm not saying that eye candy is bad, but that from a performance standpoint, Aero Glass is a detrimental "upgrade".

I've been enjoying Metro on my Ultrabook more now because it has a multitouch trackpad.
With the cypress trackpad I can do a lot of gestures that make metro browsing much more tolerable.
Feels like a macbook although not as smooth yet.

Oh yeah I forgot, Windows 8 is not for desktops. Carry on then.

Still, I would've liked the option instead and having it default depending on the system. Like with Win7, having the transparency effects and stuff disabled when on battery.

If smoothness and battery life were important, I'd think MacBook Air should be the first choice.

Indeed Windows 8 is not for desktop. Actually, I don't think it's even for laptops. It's more like an OS for tablets than a Windows OS.

The transparency effect is especially bad as implemented in Aero. Even if you disable it, it's still rendering transparency effects in background as long as Aero or DWM is active. The only way to disable it completely is by changing to the Classic theme.

It is better turned on on systems with slower CPUs because hardware acceleration only works with Aero turned on.

It's a weird design decision from Microsoft. Windows XP had hardware acceleration all the time, and thus interface performance was much better with XP. On Windows Vista and 7 (especially Vista), if both the CPU and GPU are weak, then you are screwed.

I think Microsoft is finally realizing that their solution just doesn't work well with slow devices. And since they want to rely on slow devices with the tablet craze, their only course of action is to dumb things down until they get fast enough.

Indeed! they could create a pretty amazing interface.... if they manage to forget the desktop on tablets.

It's just you.

It has been discussed to death, and even The Verge has admitted that Windows 8 in its current incarnation doesn't hold a candle to the iPad yet where smoothness and interface performance are concerned. I don't think there is any need to echo that.

And it's also worth noting that the iPad 3 is even smoother thanks to it having doubled the RAM of the iPad 2 (and with twice the bandwidth for GPU).

As an aside, it's hardly a fair comparison in that video since they use the Samsung Series 7 slate, which houses a Core i5... vs ARM in the iPad. The Samsung Series 7 slate runs... hot and fiery. Extremely so. Not to mention you'd be lucky to get 2 hours of usage under certain scenarios (like screen at max brightness under direct sunlight, for instance)
