ygo wct 2006 and vbalink help

I've been trying to link duel with a friend through vbalink plus hamachi and we get connected through the options>link>setting but when we're connecting through the gba.bios it just doesn't work can someone confirm if this is universal or if I'm doing something incorrectly. Will one of us have to run the vbaserver then we both connect to it via link settings and afterwards use the gba.bios in game to connect?

The games were previously unsupported by VBA Link (and in fact did not work) and it's unclear from the site which of them work now so I'd say this is most likely as a consequence of that.
