Exclamation Europe wants to ban cars in cities

Never in the history of humanity has a better idea ever been uttered concerning pollution-reduction measures.
On an aside, anyone fancy going to work on a bike?

I go to work on a bike. It's nice, especially in the summer.
Less so in the winter, and even less so if they haven't plowed the roads beforehand
Just a 15 minute ride if take it slow. Managed to get it down to 8, but I was really sweaty when I arrived.

And this idea is not going to go anywhere until all the cities have excellent public transportation.
As it stands now, the morning/afternoon trains and buses with workers and students are almost filled.
I do not want to stand like a sardine in a barrel to save the environment a little.

That's right ban cars and save the world by making more busses and producing more electricity for trams and overhead electric busses from power stations billowing tons of smoke into the air or which are Nuclear Powered. Brilliant Plan. Not.

I would actually ride a bike, that is if I had a cool weather here.
It's too hot to do it.

im sorry but..... come on here how is this ever a good idea.

i dont even own a car.

you know what lets go into detail about how bad of a idea this is.

Say goodbye to affordable food (and of course other products) as shipping gets a hell of alot more expensive.

Say goodbye to a hell of alot of money spent improving the transport system to be at a suitable level to meet demands (hell im quite sure that isnt even possible without something extremely excessive, its hard enougth to get on some busses and trains now, if you take out cars you will need a hell of alot more)

Say goodbye to going to some certain places without going half way across the country (exaggeration but hell you know what i mean try going to some small rural towns via public transport, good luck thats all i got to say)

Say hello to overcharged travel fairs on public transport, they have to make the money back somehow right.

Say hello to transport company's being able to do anything they please as there is no viable alternative.

to hell with it ill be here all day if i try and put down all the reasons why it sucks.

Spoiler:
yes i know you were being sarcastic rikki.

i know 2050 is a long way away, and we probably will be using something different by then anyway but hell....

Public transportation uses a small percentage of the power now used by individual cars, if divided down per person. You're right that today, neither the amount of public transport vehicles and attending personnel, nor the electric power supply could handle such a demand, but with a gradual change, the supply could increase along with the supply.
A few difficulties that arise in the wake of such a plan:
- Logistics, both for firms and average citizens. You can't haul a washing machine through public transport, and few will want to pay the additional delivering fee. And shops, among others, still have to be supplied, so transporrt vehicles, big and small, will have to stay on the roads.
- Park & Ride parking spaces. They'll boom, with all associated space allotment and fees.
- Public defiance. I don't see ANY country, neither in Europe nor elsewhere, that would vote for this on the long run. Politicians just can't take away Man's favourite plaything.
- Trash management. If the idea sticks as intended, most private households will get rid of their cars. With no buyers, they'll have to be scrapped and/or recycled. Nowadays, there's nowherenear the capacity for that.
- Economical issues. The automobile industry is a powerhouse for countries like Germany and France, with most other EU countries being tied in for spare parts, electronics and such. Bombing this industry would lead to a great economical deficit and mass unemployment. This was a main issue why Prohibition didn't work out.

Ban cars and there won't be enough public transportation to handle everyone, I'm all for the idea........in like 50 years assuming they distribute millions in grants to increase public transportation methods, needs, etc.

But still, this will never work.

That makes about as much sense as the so-called constant reliability of wind generated power. Europe decision = fail.

By 2050 and with no cars, there's a high chance that decent and reliable automated public transport will exist.

Maybe some kind of cool hover trains and people have jetpacks and stuff.

Cars are so 1970.

If they really wanted to do something they would have supported hybrid cars, this is just a circus thrown to the general audience so that they have something to talk/complain about ignoring other issues like a war for instance among others, its to profitable to stop.

The world will run out of oil before then. Having the last remaining drops of oil fuel public transportation is stupid....you just know the fares are going to be expensive as hell. All the investment should be in renewable fuels, not a bigger version of public transportation

I wonder how well that would work in really big cities like London... I mean I can see it working well here where the cities are kinda small but not in the bigger cities. Unless they really create a well working bublic transportation system, I doubt buses and trains are enough...
