DVDRW size? a little confused here..

i just got some 4.7gb DVDRW's and i can only get 4.5gb on them in nero but when i go on DVDRW properties after it has been burnt it says 4.37gb. why does it say 4.7gb on them if you only get 4.5gb or is there a way to get 4.7gb? and why does windows says 4.37gb?

ps in nero it says a burnt a full 4.5gb of data..

That would be the wonders of marketing .

Basically it's written in gibibytes NOT gigabytes. There is 1000 mibibytes in a gibibyte, but 1024 megabytes in a gigabyte.

the math bit:

4.7 Gib = 4700 Mib = 4700000000 bytes = 4.37 GB

Ironically nero gets it totally wrong. It assumes that Gibibytes are 1000 MEGAbytes, not 1000 MIBIbytes. Thus:

4.7 Gib = 4700 MB = 4.5 GB.

hows comes my mp3 folder on my hard drive is 4.3gb but when i try to fit it ona 4.5gb dvd it dosnt fit i have to delete a folder... it crazy

dont worry my mp3 folder is 4.5gb and i just figured out the crazy math bit
4.7gb = 4700000000 bytes / 1024 / 1024 /1024 =4.37gb
in nero case
4.7gb = 4700 / 1024 = 4.59gb or something like that
in any case i think it stuped to put 4.7gb when realy they can only store 4.37gb max
i mean dual layer dvd can they realy store 8.5gb not they can only store 7.9gb oh well how anoying and are my calculation correct.

another point about that is does this mean blue ray will not be able to store 25gb or 50gb instread 23.28gb and 46.56gb?

Actually, a gigabyte is 1000 megabytes and a gibibyte is 1024 megabytes. They changed the gigabyte a some years ago to use the standard SI naming convention meaning 10^3 instead of the previous 2^10 value so as not to confuse non-computer types.

Also to add more to the advertising crap...4.7GB is the theoretical compacity of a single layer DVD, but since DVDRW requires additional space for TOC, and other UDF file system requirements ..you'll never get your 4.7 worth..

How can they do that DW? Isn't that lying?

Well..they can get away with it since they do not specify the type of data your recording. For example...If you filled the disk with nothing but CD quality audio, you may very well get your 4.7GB worth (or close), but if your putting multiple file types..well...forget the 4.7

BTW..check out our shpeal on Optical Disk formats http://darkwatcher.psxfanatics.com/c...optical_v1.htm

nero isn't wrong. They say 4500MB max on DVDs, not 4.5GB. the user who posted that they say 4.5gb must have misread. (note that this is from me using nero express, i don't know what the main program says.)

Yes, DW took the words right out of my mouth. It was the same way with floppies. Advertised as 1.44 MB, but you could only really get about 1.4 because of the FAT12 -_-.
