what is the ram called that a 233 mhz comp would use?
simple q i know...but my friend needs some more hes only got 100 and my shed has like tons of cases of like 233-300 mhz comps with like 100 ram...so many they have better chips then his...but i would like to know the name =)

dram maybe. i thinks its clocked at 66, but i'm not sure

My old comp that had a p1 233 mhz had 24 mb edo ram in it (my mom's comp has 64 mb edo in it) It is slower/older than sdram and you probably will have to go online to get it (edo is 66 mhz). Some mboards will accept both edo and sdram (my old comp did). I'm not sure what the difference in apperance is between the 2 types. The memory on my old comp had huge chips on it (as opposed to the flatter ones used nowadays) and I think it sat a little above the circuit board (almost like it was floating above the stick). If it doesn't use edo dram (which it probably does), it will use pc66/100 sdram. If you have some spare pc66/100 sdram laying around, try sticking it into the comp and see what happens.

as i said i ahve a ton of them things..but i just wanted to know the type...so i guess its the same stuff, only slow, its PC66 or 100, while the ram im getitng is 2700...bit a diff lol...anyways thanks a lot guys! really appreicate it

The numbers are deceiving.

PC100 SDRAM. The 100 referred to the fact that the memory operated at a bus speed of 100 mhz.

PC2700 DDR-SDRAM. Double Data Rate SDRAM. The 2700 refers to the amount of bandwidth, in MB, that the memory is capable of. This memory actually operates at speeds from 100 to 200 mhz. Marketing people usually multiple that by 2, since this memory tranfers twice per clock. You'll usually see numbers from 200 to 400 mhz or greater, but halve that for the true memory clock rate.

Some 233MHz machines still had the options to use SIMMs. Those are 30(?)-pin chips which you needed to double up with for them to work (if you wanted 64Mb, you needed 2 32Mb or 4 16Mb chips). If it has DIMM slots (which it should), you can use any old PC66-133 chips in there as IIRC they are backwards compatible.

I think the memory in my packard bell might have been simm since it had one stick of 16 mb and one stick of 8 mb (my mom's comp has 2 sticks of 32 mb edo). I went on the internet and it said the mboard was compatible with both edo dram and sdram and it said it could go to 128 mb. So I got 2 sticks of 64 mb pc66/100/133 and it only detected 16 mb at first. After going into the bios and leaving (w/o changing settings) it recognized 32 mb. While it didn't ever recognize the entire amount of ram, I was able to play the descent freespace demo (wouldn't run on 24 mb). I then put the old edo mem back in and got the sdram returned. It could have been some stupid unmarked jumper that was causing the problem but as I don't use that comp anymore I don't care :D.

Probably greater than the max amount you can have per slot. One of my old boards can only pick up 32Mb on a 256Mb Stick.

I thought you meant that there had to be just 2 sticks, not 2 sticks of the same capacity. Stupid me :D. Well the site could have been wrong on the max. capacity but I swear it said 128 max. The comp only had 2 slots tho so if I were to put in 128 mb, it would have to be 64x2. But I'm not gonna worry about it because I don't use it (my brother does) but when I used it it worked really good. I was able to play diablo 2 demo on it with playable fps and delta force 2 with EXTREME slowdowns (like 30 sec freeze frame when there was an explosion/gunfire, otherwise 15-20 fps) and 10 mins for loading levels. For the most part it ran descent 1 (and descent 2 demo) @ 60 fps, except for the 3d map.

It might just be that it's 128Mb in SIMMs (32x4) and it doesn't properly support newer DIMMs.

It could have been that it didn't like the sdram (maybe it wasn't fully supported) and to be able to use 128 mb you would have to get 2 sticks of edo or something. It only had 2 slots so 32x4 was out of the question, although if it had 4 slots it probably would have worked out well.

Is the CPU a P-233 or a P2-233..it would make a diff which kind of ram it uses. Basically, how old is it. if it's more than say 6-8 years, it's prob a p-233 and it uses 72 pin SIMMS, if its only about 5 years old, it may be a p2-233 and use SDRAM but that isn't alway the case..some older P2's still contained the older SIMMS so the only way to know is to open the comp and look :).

Well the comp I had was a packard bell multimedia s605 that was made in nov. 1997. It supports dimm memory (it accepts both edo and sdram). I just checked the manual for my mom's comp and hers only accepts simm memory (it has 4 slots) and it supports both fast page and edo oO. Her comp was made sometime in 1996 (don't know the month). It says that there is 2 banks of memory and both have 2 sockets so I guess that's a clue that it has simm memory ;). I can scan the memory configuration page from the manual if anyone needs to use it for upgrading a comp with simm memory. BTW my old packard bell has a p1 233 mhz with mmx and my mom's comp has a p1 200 mhz without mmx.
